Super H 12 volt system

If you return to the home page and read the article from Bob M about doing the same conversion on an M it'll be basically the same. Larry

You also might want to use a Hitachi alternator as it is a little smaller in diameter than the delco 10si. I have used both. Just don't cut the sheet metal to make the delco fit. It will fit just don't have a lot of adjustment space. Larry

A Hitachi Alternator # 14231 is a nice small alternator that wires just like a Delco 10SI.
The existing bracket can be turned upside down and threaded rod and nuts are used to space the alternator into belt alignment. The regulator is built in, so no worries.
The big terminal stud is connected to the amp gauge with a #10 wire. It hooks to the amp gauge on the terminal not connected to the battery by way of the starter switch connection. The amp meter will need its terminals reversed so the charge rate is to charge side (right) of gauge.
The battery should be connected with negative ground. The coil needs to be changed to a 12volt with no external resistor required, or it needs to have a chevy (mid 60s) ballast resistor put on the lead coming from the ignition switch. The coil should be wired so that the Positive terminal is connected to the ignition (or resistor) and the negative is connected to the distributor side terminal. (if it is a mag ignition, ignore the coil stuff above, no changes are needed or desirable)
The L terminal on the alt is connected to, one of the following: a 3amp diode from radio shack with the band end of the diode toward the alternator, a marker lamp from a side marker light (not LED), or an LED with a 10ohm 5 watt resistor in parallel with it, the other terminal or connection to the above connects to the ignition voltage (at the ballast resistor on the switch side, or at the positive terminal of the 12v coil). These options are equal in usefullness. If you want an idiot light the bulb or LED and resistor will light up just like in a car when the ignition is on but the engine is stopped,or the alt fails. The S terminal on the alt connects to the Big terminal. it is a very short wire.
The diode or light or LED keeps the engine from continuing to run when the igntion swithc is turned off. It prevents alternator voltage from supplying running current to the coil.
If it is a mag ignition, the voltage to start it charging is still needed. A simple solution is to T into the oil pressure fitting at the block and put a oil pressure switch that is normally open closed on pressure (NAPA) into the T. This switch is connected to the L termtal on the alternator, and the other terminal is connected to the starter switch battery connection.
The L terminal is equal to the #1 terminal on the Delco, and the S terminal is equal to the #2 terminal on the Delco.
The reason for choosing the Hitachi is that the Delco is big and will just barely fit under the hood of an H. (no real belt adjustability) the Hitachi fits well. Jim

I converted my Dad's SW6 to 12volts after meeting CharlieU from this site @ RPRU 2012. He had a very good looking H with a small alternator on it. Was impressed with the kit & how little he charged for whole kit. Got home & started right away. I love how it charges, not like outdated 6V battery leaking. Having the gen/reg not working. I'm a fan of the Hitachi alternator, cause of the size. These old tractors will never need more than 35 amps ever. Another great feature, it charging as soon as engine is running. Something like 400rpm. My IH 560D as typical delco 10si, it wont start charging till revs are over 1200 to 1400 rpm. That's getting very close to the top side of the letter series rpm range. This winter going to also put another CharlieU kit onto Dad's H, then 1 on my W450 after that. Here is pic on a SW6, don't have pic of H yet, but you will get the idea.

Delco fits into my "H" with a dollar-bill"s thickness of space to spare. But it does fit. A smaller one would be great.
I bought the charging diode from CharlieU, works gerat, charges immediately, tapers off, he and his equipment are highly recommended.

Here is a schematic of my SA, I used the Hitachi 14255. It's a little bigger and comes with the connector needed to connect to the S and L terminals. I included a 10 ohm resistor in series with the diode just as a safety precaution against shorting and blowing the diode during installation or testing, can be omitted if you want.
