I've wanted a W-4 since I used one on the neighbors farm when I was a kid. Been watching one just up the road - the owner died a couple of years ago and its just been sitting. I finally stopped today and talked to his son and looked at the tractor. Its a 1951, all four tires are good - like 80% or better and weights all around. Rims are good, even though they rears are loaded. Sheet metal is rusty, but straight. A couple of rust holes around where the decals should be.
The starter would not work, but the guy pop started it on a hill. It ran pretty good once I fiddled with the choke and got it all the way off. The steering is tight, and so was the gear shift lever. PTO and pulley worked. It seems like its in good shape. I know the old guy used it all the time in his little firewood business. One fender is bent in, and the bottoms of both are messed up.
Are there any things that I should check more carefully before buying? Any common problems I should watch for? It has been switched over to 12 volt.
Thanks,
Tim
