Removing Gear on PTO for Belt Pulley Drive

Hello. Taking the gear off PTO that drives the belt pulley. I want to take the gear off another PTO that I have for parts and put that gear on my PTO so that I can drive my belt pulley. I took the cover off and took off the spacer. I put 3 jawed gear puller and it just keep slipping off. Can I put the unit in a press and press the gear out from the shaft at the top? Has a bearing below this gear. will it press out also? Don't want to BREAK any casting, gears or parts. Please let me know what you guys think and how to get this apart. THANKS

Some of the pulleys used on belt pulley shafts were wedge fit, you take the three bolts out of the hub and put them into the threaded holes and push the hub out of the pulley.

(quoted from post at 16:23:21 10/10/13) Gerry Hello. I was helping Paul with his belt pulley. The tractor is a 1941 Farmall A. THANKS

I think you're asking about #23 bevel gear?

The bull shaft on all the A"s were the same part some with a gear and some without. Some gears had a different number of teeth but they all will interchange. Removing the end pulley or blank on many shafts requires a press and the shaft has to be removed. A wheel puller will not do it. If your delete did not have a gear you would do best to remove the entire shaft . . . by removing the bolts around the shaft and pulling the entire shaft, bearing and all. You would then replace the shaft with the one from the parts tractor. You need to keep the PTO engaged as you remove the shaft or you will have major problems realigning the inner shell which you would do by engaging the shell. Next you will have to adjust the lash of the gears with appropriate spacers or it will not work properly including the gear that drives the 640 PTO. There are old post on here telling how to do that. It does require careful action. Hope it goes well.

put it in a press and use a split type puller to hold the gear, it isn't that tight but the taper on the back of the gear makes it hard to "get hold of"

I did my SA awhile back and this is how to do it in a press. Put a bearing separator, some call it a bearing puller, between the gear and the bearing. Support the bearing separator in the press with the long end of the shaft hanging down. Press off the gear making sure not to loose the woodruff key. When pressing the new gear back on, pay careful attention to get it seated just like the old one so the shims on the belt pulley drive still give the right adjustment. When you get it all back together, remove the pipe plug on the belt pulley housing on the top right and inspect the clearance. The two bevel gears should not be bound up or tight nor too loose. While looking in the hole rock the belt pto shaft back and forth and make sure there is a little slop. If you press the gear back to it's original placement on the shaft and use the same shims, it should be ok. While your at it, it's a good time to check the bearing #25 and replace it if worn.

If they had different number of teeth both gears need changed or they wont match. You say there was a 640 rpm ive never seen that on an A as they all ran 540 or so i thought. They did have different sizes of pulleys so why would you have different speeds of the shaft.

Gene Hello. I guess we could do that. The gear is on a PTO that I am going to send to my brother. My buddy has a Belt Drive to put on his A. When we took the cover off it just had the spacer under the cover.
