Cant think of a way to do this ....

Is there a way to figure out where the anti-freeze thats getting into the oil is coming from on an assembled engine ? I cant seem to think of any way. Cylinder leak test and the like tell you that there is a problem, but not the source. I am thinking, pull the head, check for cracks and straightness, see if gasket shows sign of failure, and if all looks fine there, go further. If you pull the pan, do you think you could see if the sleeve seal was leaking with pressure applied ? Other ideas ? Thanks

Get an additive for the antifreeze and a blacklight. Warm up the engine and pull the pan first - the gasket is a lot cheaper. THEN if coolant is coming down the oil drain from the head, you could pull the head.

MIKE i would pull pan first preasureize and look around liners and block. piston and liners and oil return galleys then the head if needed. RENE'

Dont need to pull head yet but pull the pan and look for leak at the sleeve mite take a day or two. Most leak there before the head.

If the O-rings on the sleeves are leaking the coolant will be coming from the outside of the sleeve. If you have a gasket leak of a crack the coolant will be coming down the inside of the sleeve or the oil return passages in the block.

Actually its a MF 50, and I am not that up on Masseys. The pan is not an easy drop and look deal however. I may have to reffer this one to someone more schooled in the art of the Massey !

Mike is it gasoline or diesel? 3 cylinder or 4? If it is a Massey, I am not sure the engine was sleeved. I have a Massey 50 but mine is a 3 cylinder Perkins. I have seen one torn down and I do not believe it was sleeved but I was not looking for that.

Had a sleeved Farmall engine which leaked coolant into the engine oil. Removed oil pan while coolant was at normal level but no leak was apparent.
Removed radiator and blocked lower radiator hose connection on block. Fabbed adapter on upper radiator hose connection to engine head to accept garden hose fitting. Filled block with water so that all air could escape. Then connected garden hose (pressure approx. 30 psi). Leak showed up at one sleeve bottom. After pulling sleeve it appeared to be badly corroded at the O-ring.
I did not run the engine during this test but it may even leak ONLY at running temperature.

I had the same problem. Talked to an old mechanic friend of mine and he said "dump some stop leak in and get the temp up fast" Sounded like a crap shoot to me but it worked. The sleeves were leaking past the o rings. Haven't had a bit of trouble since. Of course...you may not be as lucky as I was but its worth a try.
