Ertl is offering a 1938 M to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the M.

Was there a 1938 model M? I thought the M started in 1939.

Harvesters fiscal year began on November 1. If you have a serial number build date in November or December it is the next model year. So the 1939 models would have began on November 1 of 1938. It may have been possible to buy a 39 in 38 but it would still be a 39 model. Ertl doesn't always get it right, kinda like their W30's with side curtains.

If it looks exactly like a production M it wouldn't be correct. Regular production didn't start until July or August 1939. Design work in 1938 looked different than the final design. Even in part of 1939 the tractor design was changed.
If I remember correct up into at least may 1939 they were still changes.

this just proved that the toy maker didn't do their homework and are wrong again. in the '38 'm' would have been designated '3F'

Near as I can tell, Ertl just finds somebody's tractor to copy and goes with whatever story the owner tells them.

How about the "precision" B that has a rear light and no headlights?

I suggest that if you have any interest at all, you should buy one and put it up somewhere new in the box.

In 40-50 years the toy might be quite valuable due to the "misprint" on the box.

I have the 29th M made and my casting codes are 7*10*I From what I have read on the Wisconsin historical web site there were about 50 M's made july of 1939

I think they were still making F-series until April or so before they switched over to start building the letter series.
