M VS 400 DISTRIBUTOR

A tach drive was likely from a 400 or 450.
The question is what are you putting it on. It should have springs and max advance set for the tractor it is used on or there could be issues. The advance is governed by the weights and springs,as well as the slot in the pivot plate that controls the distance the shaft can advance in degrees. the amount is usually stamped near the weights. Will a 400 distributor work on an M? probably need to mess with the weights? to time the part that pulls out of the the distributor, what needs to be done?

The 400 dist. will work on the m. It will run fine. The 400 may have less advance than the M was designed for (I do not know this as fact) but it will run. A antique distributor machine or a good adjustable timing light and a dwell meter can be used to get it correct.
Much depends on what has been done to either the M in its history, or the 400 distributor in its history.
The timing curve and total; advance are to be found in the repair manuals of each (or in D Slater"s, mkirsch"s, or pete 23"s head) Jim

Like Jim said no way to identify for sure without checking. Most have a letter or letter code at the round part where the clamps go to adjust timing. That code tells what advance curve and total was original and direction of rotation it was designed for.
Trouble is IH included parts to change the advance curve in some units when piston and sleeve sets to give more power were installed.
Gasoline M tractors originally came with 40 degree total advance and a letter A code. Lots were changed to 22. 400 was 25 degrees and the letter N code.
Jim Becker published a article about IH distributors once. Don't remember if he included a code chart.

One of my Ms has a 450 distributor on it like you describe with the tach drive. Ive never noticed any difference in the way it runs or works, but its kind of a mutt tractor anyways, but the engine block is definitely M. Dad bought a 450 really cheap, and was going to fix it up and use it, but it had way to many problems, so we stripped parts off on it and scrapped the rest. The mag stopped firing during harvest one year, and parts were going to take a week to get to us, so he just swapped out the mag for the distributor. As I said, I cant tell any difference in the way it runs compared to my other M.
