The T/A in my 300 is very noisy. Lot of clanking going on down there. What can I do to quieten it down without replacing it? Thanks, Dan

Without more info its a wild guess. If its a farmall model its not to hard to remove the top cover on the center housing. Look in the t/a clutch compartment for bad pressure plate or release bearing or connected parts. Look in the t/a section for signs of metal loose bearings, broken parts, excess movement of the planet gears on the shafts, etc. Still not found? Check the transmission input shaft out of the t/a to transmission main shaft bearing or input and constant mesh gear. look through the belt pulley gear box opening. If the noise is still there when the main clutch is disengaged. Check pto drive parts.
About the only thing that can be done without repair if the t/a clutch doesn't slip is in the t/a clutch section. Get the release bearing or related parts if damaged away from things and then just stay in direct t/a. May make tractor harder to shift.

There's pretty much nothing you can do except repair/replace the TA if it's actually the TA making noise like that.

It's the main link between the engine and the transmission.

Replace or repair, and it will outlast you. A lot of people want to "eliminate" the TA, but really fixing it is a one-time expense, makes the tractor that much more valuable, and it's a lot easier to find the TA parts than a TA "elimination kit."
