serial number info question

is there any other information that can be learned from the serial number other than year of manufacture, like where the tractor was originally shipped to or sold from. in my case its model M serial number fbk-6360. thanks in advance for your reply

IH didn't keep meticulous records about where the tractors went or who they were sold to. Remember it was 1939. No computers, let alone sophisticated tracking databases. Everything was on paper.

Nowadays when a new tractor is sold, I'm sure they know who owns it and what they had for breakfast the morning they made the deal.

On your tractor no. But on others you can learn if it was equipped with any options such as low gears, high gears, high altitude pistons, etc. That would be indicated by letters at the end.

I"m sure that IH DID keep records, at least as far as which one of their many dealers a specific serial number was sold to. After that, it was the responsibility of the dealer to keep records on which customer purchased that specific serial number. Unforunately, a lot of those records were either lost or destroyed during the merger with Case.
