muffler for farmall

need to get a new muffler for my farmall h and went to napa to get one but its not like the dozen others I have gotten over the years for my other tractors. The old ones I have are plated (galvanized, maybe?) They hold up well in the elements and don't rust, and they are quiet. The new one looks painted, they tell me its aluminized but I see it changing colors already, I think it will rust, but the part I really can't stand is the sound, its not the same, its definitely louder. I always got my mufflers thru napa or case ih and could not tell one from another, but my local case ih dealer says his supplier has changed also and his muffler is the same as the one I got at napa. Does anyone know where I can find what I want? I know I can put a stainless one on it but I hate to do that on a working tractor and have it turn blue after I work it hard for a while (not to mention the price!) I would appreciate any suggestions, thank you.

I bought several, and I thought it was the internal desing, not so much where you bought it. I thought the straight-thru one, even tho it had louvres in there to catch the sound, was a lot louder than the one with the internal blocking panel.

There have always been two muffler manufacturers, Stanley and Nelson.

You got a Stanley muffler. They have no internal baffling, except for those stupid punched-out louvers. They aren't much better than a straight pipe.

CaseIH dealers always sold the Nelson mufflers, which have a baffle in them to force the sound out into the outer shell of the muffler.

When buying mufflers, look down the hole. If you can see through, put it back on the shelf unless you're looking for a muffler-shaped object with the sound of a straight pipe.

Apparently Nelson is no longer in business if your Napa and CaseIH are getting the Stanleys now.

Your only choice then is the "restoration quality" mufflers sold by Carter & Greunwald or Steiner.

I'd pay the same money for another stainless muffler. The sound is great, and I don't care what color it turns. There is no rust...and no leaks.

I will be buying one for my H in the spring.
