450 paint on a 400

Question...every time I see a 400 advertised for sale here in NY or at a local tractor pull it has the white grill and the white panels on the side just like the 450. Did people back in the day change out tins for some reason or repaint their tractors to purposely look like a 450? Was that common? I want a 450 bad and I get excited every time I see that paint scheme because it's the first indication of a 450, then I'm let down because it has the 400 badges and the 264 in it...~Anthony

It was very common back in the day especially when the 350 and 450 tractors came out as some felt the need to show off and look like they are keeping up with the new introductions at the time. Heck, I have even seen H's and M's with the grilles painted white never mind that the steering column and operator platforms are way different.

BigTone, When the 450 came out the white trim looked so good that many added this color scheme to their 400's and 300's . In fact a lot of H and M Farmalls had their grilles painted white along with added white on lower hood and fuel tank. Most that did it here in SW Ohio kept the original 300 and 400 emblems and just added the white trim. However a few did order the new 350 and 450 emblems and installed them also.It was strictly a cosmetic thing. I was a teenager then and would have done the same thing if I had one. Now I would want to keep it all original.

Alright that makes sense now. I saw an M and red power this year with the white and it didn't look half bad. Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. ~Anthony

In the mid sixties some dealerships sent out flyers offering new paint jobs when customers had their older tractors in for service. They painted the 400s and 300s like the 450s.
