W4 clutch question

I have a friend who recently purchased a W4 and has been having a few issues with it. The major one right now is there is a "knocking" type noise that seems to be proportional to the engine speed coming from the clutch area. When the tractor is not running and the tranny is in neutral the input shaft leaving the clutch toward the tranny has play in it (rotating a few degrees). Now my H has no play in the input shaft under the same conditions. Could this be where the noise is coming from? Perhaps the spline on either the shaft or the pressure plate is bad?

now it did run fine when he got it with no noise however he did dump the clutch a few times. so maybe that caused the failure? Any suggestions would be great

Thank you

The coupling between the clutch shaft and the input yoke is also suspect. Rusty is also onthe target. If neither of these it could be a chipped tooth in the trans. Jim

from your description sounds like you have the cover off. you can check the spines to see if there is play in them. might even be the clutch hub rivets are loose. the 4 taper bolts on the input shaft coupler also wear and produce slop. you can even start the tractor and listen to where this noise is coming from. i have not heard these worn parts cause a knocking though.
