Sorry to beat this to death but it is a sizeable investment and a lot of work to haul so I don't want to buy too much plow. I have a 1586 with lots of weight and duals that dyno'd at the full rated HP of about 160. Runs strong etc. We have good Michigan topsoil leaning toward the clay but not too heavy clay. Just got back from looking at a 6-16 IH 720 on land hitch moldboard plow. Really nice unit and it is mine for the taking. Just a little taken a-back by the size of this thing. I rechecked my old post and it seemed like the consensus was that this was in the range for my tractor. I should just buy this thing and quit worrying, right?

I pulled 6x16 here in n. iowa black gumbo for years with a 1066. If you start going to a wider plow bottom it really starts to pull hard. A 5x20's would be a good load here for a 1586.

IF you are going to plow ON LAND and you have mostly flat ground to play on then the 1586 will haul 7 bottoms with no problem . Our 1066 over here in the humps and bumps plays with 5 bottoms in the furrow and if we went to onland then that plow your looking at would be a perfect match for a 1066 , a friend ten miles to the west of us pulls 7x18 720 onland with a 1466 and pulls them in first high . Our soil type varys from tough clay knobs to sand to muck to nice top soil and we run first high in SOD ground at 10 inches . So stop worrying .

Worse thing that could happen is you can't keep the front down and take a bottom off like we did with a 5 X 20 720 plow and a 1466 in the hills.

Your 1586 will handle it fine. Low range 3rd gear should work fine. That tractor will handle a 25ft disc as well. I pull a 22ft with my 1486.

I know I mentioned it before, but a friend with a JD 4640, or about the same HP (155 I believe) as the 1586 pulled a JD adjustable 8 bottom on-land. Started out at about 20" and as the tractor got tired, he adjusted back down to either 16 or 18". He still has that 4640, but now pulls the same plow with a 4wd NH and widened it back out to either 20 or 22". What he plows is mainly wheat stubble, and most of what he has is not heavy clay or anything hard to plow.
I can't see you having a problem in 95% of the soils in the country with a 6x16" on-land with duals.

Good to go.

I know some people say 7 bottoms, but c'mon, give the old gal a break, ya know? No sense in tearing an old tractor up for the sake of maybe finishing a few minutes sooner.

(quoted from post at 19:55:25 10/06/13) You would NEVER pull it here, (NEWI).

Have you ever been to Michigan? Think central sands area...Stevens Point or Plainfield type dirt. He says clay, but I have soil sampled east, west and south and haven't seen anything too heavy. It is either tan sand or dark sand.

My dad pulled a IH 510 6-16 infurrow with a 1066 here in the clay hills of SE MN with no problems. The tractor has no cab or fluid in the tires either. So a 15 would just play with 6-16's.

Appreciate all the input! I actually screwed up, it is a 6-18 not a 6-16. I was being glared at by "someone not to be mentioned" who was waiting for me to take her to dinner so I typed fast and messed up. The fella who is selling the plow pulled it with a 1566. I think I am OK but would doubt it not in the least if it were a 16. I am picking up a 7 shank chisel in the deal also which will probably see more use than the 720.

You will have much more tractor than the plow requires. You would need about 100 to 120 HP to pull that plow as long as you had enough weight to handle the tough spots. I would say go for it if the deal is right.
