On a tractor without an engine and no SN , BUT with a starter---how do you tell if it is a M--MD or an H ????

H starter is in the center, M starter is off to the left side if your on the seat of tractor. An MD will/should have levers or brackets to switch it from gas to diesel, hope you found your answer.

If it's still got the original sheet metal you can tell an M from an MD sheet by looking at the hood. If the exhaust opening is on the left side it's an M; on the right it's an MD.

OK FELLAS muffler is on the right side and the starter is on the left side. Making this a Farmall MD.

This tractor has a very nice and clean Chevy 283. No frame has been cut or altered. This is how I bought it.

ANYWAY to get to an approx. year without a serial number. Tractor has some casting numbers.
Thank you for your help....

Of those tractors only a MD will have a starter that mounts with 3 bolts. H and M gas tractors are 2 bolt starter mounting.

I just bought what was there--no history on prior engine or why it was removed................

Deciphering casting date codes is explained in the link below.

Generally a tractor was assembled 3 - 4 weeks after the dates indicated on major castings (transmission, axle housings, wheels, etc.)
IHC casting date codes
