been trying to use my trusty old MTA to do a few things and it has developed a strange problem, it will not run for more than an hour or so and it quits, remove the distributor cap and the rotor is cooked, I mean burned right up! Nothing has changed in the ignition in the 12 years I have owned it no coil changes no nothing, I have burned up 4 rotors in about 5 1/2 hours of runtime any experts have any answers??

I have had a bad condenser burn up points pretty fast but never a rotor.Try new points and condenser. Also is this still 6 volt or 12 volt conversion.Coil output sounds ecessive. Are these rotors OEM or aftermarket.Scott

have tried both OEM and aftermarket rotors neither better than the other, it has been converted to 12 volt before I bought the tractor and like I say has been fine for the 12 years I have owned it

I can't remember all my electronics theory, but is it possible that the ballast resistor has lost its resistance?

How's it charging? Could be the alternator regulator has gone wacko and is sending 90 volts to the coil, though I'd expect your battery to be boiling if that were the case.

What about the cap, wires and plugs. High resistance would cause the spark to try or get to the distributor shaft or housing. Just a thought since I don't consider myself a expert on electronics.

I would guess a bad cap or wires. The spark is arcing & burning the rotor instead of going the easy way. Does it have a miss too?
