Oil pan 1947 Farmall A

The oil pan part number for the A is 355735R91. For the SA it is 355735R92. Are these interchangeable ? I need a new/used one for my A.
Thank you !

R2 should always work for R1. R3 will work for R2 and R1 and so forth. Usually a R1 will work for R2 or R3 but that is not guaranteed.

When a new version of the part also needed a change of something besides the original part the part number itself was updated to a new number. In that case you would see something like this in the parts book. Part number xxxxxxR1 will work for yyyyyyR1 by also using the additional part(s) etc.

"R" is definitely NOT for "Revision." IH used letter and number prefixes and suffixes on their part numbers because they made SO many machines with SO many individual parts.

Using your logic, the IH water temp sender I have in my hand [for a truck], part number 85615HA, would stand for "half a**ed"...

Early tractors used a lot of D suffix parts. During the letter series they were changing mostly to R suffix numbers. By the time the 66 series was coming out most of the numbers had a C suffix.

Regarding the R suffix numbers, Ag parts used numbers up into the 500,000s while Motor Truck parts generally were 600,000 on up.
