I have my dad's 300 that he bought new in '56. The TA[low range] slips in even 1st gear. When slipping it makes a zinning noise[sprag clutch]? I realise there a fair amount of work involved to change the TA unit but what all is needed, where is the best place to get replacement parts and what would be the ballpark price range for parts?Direct range is fine and since the tractor has only transmission driven PTO, the TA can be used for live PTO operation, kinda like a hand clutch. Some time ago transmission oil has started to leak out of under the steering box so that should be addressed anyway. Tractor gets limited use a year probably 50 to 70 hours but it's handy to use with the Fast Hitch drawbar and all. Any thoughts? Thanks....Ron

This site sells them, Kevin Meier (posts here) sells them, Hy Capacity seem very good as a brand. Avoid Mechanical Diode brand. (rumor only no direct info on that)
Don't use the TA clutch that way, it is a 7 inch disk type clutch and will die pretty soon used for ""live PTO"".
650 for parts if replaced (ball park) 200 for parts if only the sprag is replaced (along with the front friction clutch!

Thank-you Kevin and Janicholson for your reply. Also I have a doner 300U with independent PTO and no engine. Is there different transmissions and torque tubes than the standard PTO or is it just the clutch hub and PTO unit at the back? I have no idea what this transmission is like or I just change the whole unit. Did IH have 2 different transmission and torque tube housings or can they be interchanged?....Ron

The TA system is most of but not all of the IPTO parts needed. Were it mine I would use the other (donor) rear half. Easier than most other issues. The internal trans parts are the same (I believe). Jim

Independent PTO has a second drive shaft that runs below the transmission and rear end to drive the PTO unit at the rear. It is powered off the clutch pressure plate by a "tube gear" that runs on the outside of the transmission input shaft.

Transmission-driven PTO just pulls the power off the transmission input shaft at the rear.

If you have the transmission-driven PTO, your tractor is lacking the second shaft and all the associated parts.
