856 starts up ok then loses power after a minute or so

Hi Guys, I have an 856 Farmall International that has been running good after I bought it a year ago until it got low on diesel & I added some to it. Every since then, it will start up, run fine for a minute or so then start losing power & die. I can restart it & it will be ok for a minute or so & then the same thing. I changed out the fuel filter & water separator when this first started occurring thinking that would fix it. At first I thought it did but it didn"t. I"m wondering if there mite be a screen somewhere that"s stopped up from running it down low maybe leading into the injector pump. I had that on an izusu diesel skid steer one time. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in Advance, David B

Check for a screen in the tank outlet fitting, may have a little "cigarette filter screen" inside the tank. Sounds like you have dirt in the tank that cloggs the outlet screen after it runs a bit.
Maybe time to drain and clean the tank also.

To me it sounds like the governor weight retaining inside of the injection pump has come apart and is plugging up the return passages, causing a hydraulic lock. To check this have a screwdriver available that will fit the timing cover screws on the side of the injection pump. Start the engine and as it starts to slow down, loosen up the two screws and let the fuel spray out. If engine speeds up, YOU FOUND THE PROBLEM. The injection pump needs to be rebuilt to fix the problem. Post back what you find. Good luck

If your tractor has the Stanadyne/Roosamaster rotary fuel-injection pump the problem is likely a plastic dampener inside the pump. When it happens, it will continually shut itself off once started. It will restart once it sits a bit, then peter out like it's starving for fuel.

Apparently this problem occured AFTER adding fuel, but was not there previous to that moment, so I would get a flashlight, take a good look inside the tank, and see if you can find some kind of foriegn object floating around that can block off the fuel outlet. I"m guessing there may have been something in the fuel can you used.

Look inside that fuel tank using a good flash light for any crud. I had that problem on a Chevy Citation that would just quit running, but would restart. I installed a fuel pressure gauge and I noticed when pulling a hill the pressure would drop. I pulled the gas tank and found rust and crud around the fuel pump pick up tube. I installed a new pump after cleaning the tank. My neighbor was watching and said I wouldn't change that pump. I said you're not doing all this work. He has a Doctorate in math. He fell off a ladder in 2005 trying to cut an overhanging limb. The chain saw just missed his wife who was holding the ladder when he feel. They flew him to a shock trauma unit in Baltimore. Before that he wanted to install a security system in his home. He thought if a 19 year old kid that didn't finish high school could install it, he could do it after reading the instructions. Things went well until he hit an electric wire in the wall when he was drilling. I guess he had to hire that kid after all. There's an article in the local paper last week about a Verizon employee installing FIOS in a home and hit a live wire. It did $70000.00 damage to the house when it caught fire. Hal

Thanks to all that have replied. I'll be busy on another project for several days before I can get back on this but I'm gonna ck the tank first. I'll post back when finished. Thanks Again, David Butler
