Finally got the wife"s H Farmall rebuilt. Now she overheats, when she wants too. Why? Ran cool before rebuild. Same water pump/fan/thermostat. 50/50% antifreeze. May run 30 min./2 hrs. them BAM, temp gauge pegs out overheat. Idle or WOT, doesn"t make any difference. What am I overlooking?

First be sure the gauge is not malfunctioning. Is there boiling and overflow? If so one possibility is a hose (either upper or lower) that has an internal flap acting like a heart valve and closing off the flow. Even with a stuck Thermostat they bypass enough to cool unless worked on 50% power in most cases. Look for combustion gasses in the coolant as it warms up from cold. (Kit from auto store) Then watch the coolant flow (from cold, to the 10 minute mark as it should show nice flow with no scalding your face. A digital remote (laser aimed) thermometer is way handy to see where the heat is. Timing will also make a radcal overheat if retarded. Let us know what happens. Jim

Are you pulling an implement? Your main jet adjusting screw may need to be opened. Your engine may be running lean. When it overheats touch the bottom hose lightly to see if it feels hot. If it doesn't feel hot your tubes in your radiator may need to be cleaned. Hal

Have you removed the rad cap so all the airpockets are gone while the engine runs. Use a thermometer to check the coolant temp while it runs.

I would agree with Jim on the thermostat not having much impact on an H, the bypass is quite large. This should also prevent air pockets in the block.

I would expect bad gauge, head gasket leak or slow timing.

Something is blocking flow somewhere. As I'm sure you know, you can work it to the bone and it shouldnt overheat. I'd pull hoses off and take a peek.

Tested thermostat and gauge tonight. 160 degree thermostat, opened at 165/170. Gauge needle on U at 180 and on the N at 210. When she overheats it goes past the T on hot, instantly. Water blows out past hose clamps. Other than that she runs smooth and pulls good.

Maybe a little too much permatex added somewhere during the rebuild. Could cause a water flow restriction.
