1486 opinions?

anybody have any opinions of the ih 1486?
have the opportunity to get one but dont know a whole lot. heres the facts
paint is in good condition, cab is fair, ac still works. electrical still works, TA doesnt work(deal breaker?) clutch feels good shifts smooth, 18.4-38 tires are 40%/ body pretty straight hasn't been beat to hell. hydraulics respond quickly steers good. 7500 hours. guy says it was overhauled recently but not to sure about that. started good this morning at 40 degrees.
thinking about using it for pulling 20ft drill and does it pull a disc well? maybe use it for round baling as well. any input is welcome as im pretty in the dark on this one. Thanks a lot in advance

Try working the PTO. Maybe you could hook your baler up to it and give it a go? PTO's can be expensive to rebuild. The 1486 comes standard with both 540 and 1000 RPM PTO's, the 1586 only comes with the 1000. Also, try shifting it between High & Low Range, and into Reverse, and also between first through fourth gears. I don't think a broken TA is a deal breaker. Check the steering for excessive play at highway speeds and check the brakes--they are expensive to rebuild on a 1486. Finally, check the rear wheel castings for cracks, because they have been known to fail over time. (One of mine did.) But overall, it is a very good, very powerful, tough and comfortable tractor. I have a 1586, and I'm very happy with it, but I'd rather have the 1486 due to its dual PTO's and greater choice of forward speeds over the 1586. Hugh

thanks for the help guys. steering does get a little sloppy, looks like the seal might be done in though on the ram so not a huge deal in my opinion just will have to fix that eventually.
more info on it, its a 1980, has full rack of weights and fluid in tires, shifts good through all gears minus the ta. guy says he has had it for 4 years and only really used it the first two. all electrical works but the radio and the guy wants 5500 for it. seems like a good enough deal. good reliable cheap horsepower right? thats the trifecta ha

I didn't know that...hmmmm....anybody out there have a dual (540/1000) PTO they wanna sell or trade...I am told by the dealer that 886's through 1086's used the same unit that can be installed in the 1586, as well as their horsepower equivalents in the '88' series that followed...my email is open, Hugh.

That is a lot of tractor for that price. If the owner would consent to letting you pull the hydraulic filter, put in a new one for him and cut the old one up to look for any metal shavings that would make me feel better about it . TA's normally don't drop much metal when they are bad so if you find any it is most likely from previous failure in power train or one is going on right now.

Check the steering cylinder by picking up on the right end of the cylinder ram. When they get worn enough the cylinder will drag on the axle.

If you have a chance to check the engine when it hasn't been run for at least a day, crack the engine oil drain plug loose and check for coolant. It will leak out before any oil. That will also give you a chance to see how it starts and how it runs when cold.

I worked at IH dealership when 86 series came out. they ordered all 14s without pto and then installed duel shaft ptos before they were delivered to customer

One of the best tractors I have ever owned. Pulled a round baler with mine for years. Used it for some field work , planter ,disc. Mine has duals on it ,no fluid , pulling a 22 ft. JD disc in low 3rd or 4th. If you can find a good one you will like it. A new TA job taking it to a shop runs around $1,500.00 to $ 2,000.00. All the IH tractors over 100 HP only had the 1000 PTO but most were changed to dual shafts. All PTO units from a 706 thru 1486 will interchange. A rebuilt unit runs around $800.00. I gave $12,000.00 for my 1486 several years ago.

thanks for the input guys it helped. ended up getting it for 5500 and so far have used it for pullin my feed wagon. pto and hydraulics work good. I believe the digital data center was changed to the 88 series style with 4 buttons instead of the 5 i see on other 86"s. tranny feels good, needs a lil ether on the mornings that are below 20 degrees. I think i like it ten times better than our beat to hell 4430 that has 20000 hours. definetly my new favorite tractor.

(quoted from post at 18:35:11 09/29/13) Thanks to you who provided info about PTO interchangeability, Hugh
Pretty sure you can go all the way back to the '06 series ..the main difference being you stack 7 and 9 drive plates in the pack

I actually hadnt even thought to try it yet, havent
needed to just pullin the feeding wagon. went ahead
and pulled the ta back this afternoon and guess
what, it worked! it was low on fluids when i got it
maybe just topping it off helped?

Most times the TA goes out on the low side and sometimes it won't slip until it's under a load. Low on oil won't affect the TA unless it's very low and starving. Other hydraulic functions will start acting funny by then. Jim
