706 Ignition Key

Does anyone else have problems with loosing the key to their tractors? I"ve lost 2 keys lately from my 706 gasser. They are very loose and just drop out and get disced up or mowed over. How hard is it to put in a whole new switch??
Right now, I"m turning on the ignition with my pocket knife...seems to work pretty well...
Thanks, Cmore

Have the same problem with our Oliver 1600, 1650 and 1850.

Solution was attach a short tether (nylon shoe lace) to the key with a small magnet on the other end. When using the tractor simply stick the magnet to the dash panel or side of the hood. Now if the key falls out it won't get lost.

However if I don't have a key handy, I do same as you and use my pocket knife to operate the ignition.

Good Idea...but, I always have my pocket knife..just use it, put it back in my jeans until I'm ready to shut her off...Cmore

This is a thought only, but how about leaving the original switch in place without the key, and then install a disguised, or semi-hidden toggle switch somewhere?

The hardest part is to get to it. There is a nut on the back side that holds the switch in the dash panel and then just the two wires.

The key shouldn't fall out with the switch in the ON position.

IH used the same key from the 460/560 all the way on up through the 66 series anyway. Been driving those series tractors all my life and haven't had a key fall out yet.

Should be just four bolts to pop the dash panel loose, maybe 6 bolts. You can get it out enough to get at the key switch to undo the nut. Then it's just a quick change to a new switch with a key that doesn't fall out.

I imagine that happens from wear, from taking it in and out.

Mine may have been out a dozen times since it was new in 1967 or therebouts. It stays in fine.

I like the teather and magnet idea.

(quoted from post at 12:44:48 09/26/13) Dont I've ever had the keys out of my tractor...
Mine are always out. I have small grand children that love to play on the tractors when they visit. Because I take them out every time I never forget.

I"d just leave key in, but I"m 100 miles away, and no one lives on the farm...anyway, so there"s not a way to remove the switch by "pulling it out the front??"....or, doe it have to come out from the back?? thanks, Cmore

Undo the 4 (or 6?) bolts that hold the dash panel in place.

Pull it out enough to access the nut on the back of the switch.

Undo the nut.

Pull the switch out the front of the dash panel.

Replace the switch.

Push the switch back into the dash panel.

Thread the nut back on and tighten it.

Push the dash panel back in place, and bolt it down.
