I have found a sky blue W4, black front axle and blue hubs on the front wheels.1952 31222W1 serial number.The blue appears to be the first coat of paint under what is left of the red? Were any W4's painted blue or is this an owners paint job?

Legend has it that IH would paint the tractor any color you wanted. It could be the original color but there is no way to prove it one way or the other.

Most likely it is an old repaint. Once the paint has had 40, 50, 60+ years to harden it's difficult to detect that thin coat of original red that IH put on the tractor at the factory.

That's what I was thinking. I was in the AF back in the early '60s and everything was painted either AF blue or grey. Also had a lot of IH pickups back then.
