300 Row Crop

Picking up a 300 this weekend. Been around them before, but thats it. What are some good/bad points on these tractors? Its in good shape, has factory TA delete, and runs great. Thanks.

The only problem I had with mine was shifting hard getting to and from reverse. All the linkage was set perfect according to manual, but I still had problems. Also the hydraulic system didn't hold my round baler shut. It would open while baling hay. I replaced all the seals in the pump, but it would still bleed off. I had to use my newer MF for baling.

The TA delete is probably a plus on a tractor that old. I rarely use mine because I rarely do heavy field work - its mostly mowing and baling. Live PTO, live hydraulics and the tractor is VERY fuel efficent - especially when its not being worked hard (like on a plow). I can get a tank of fuel to last 8-10 hours easily and still have some left when putting up hay.

The down side is the hydraulic reservor is small and runs out of fluid fast (mine can't lift a 33 loader to its full height (big cylinders)) and the hydraulics are slow compared to more modern tractors. Once you are in the seat there are lots of places to hit your elbows on hard unyealding metal surfaces - like the PTO handle.

Finding equipment for the 2 point is hit and miss. Sometimes you can get something really cheap because its 2 point sometimes you pay through the nose. My 1000 balanced head mower was only $200, other sales I've seen them go for $800 - $900. The Danuser rear blade and my plow were at the same auction and sold for near scrap price - other sales they sell for a couple $100 or more.

If you run out of fluid before the loader reaches full height, simply add more oil to the reservoir until full height IS achieved. Those ARE 2 way cylinders aren"t they? And if they are not, there SHOULD be a reservoir in the top of the cylinder, with a hose from each cylinder that returns the excess oil back to the reservoir on the tractor.

I have a 300 and it is one of 2 tractors I own that you could not buy from me. Its big enough to handle wagons with some weight in them and small enough to be manuverable around a barn yard.

I converted mine to 12 volts (I resisted doing this for a long time because it would not be stock anymore, but now I love it.) I also added the Pertronics ignition when I did that and have not had ignition problems anymore.

Put some wheel weights on it if you are going to pull hay wagons. Keep gas in it and it will run.

You might wish you had the T/A back though. Post a pic when you get it!!!!!

Thanks to all for the replies. Will post a pic when i get her home. I plan on tractor riding with it, as well as putting it on the old Case square baler and sickle mower. What will i need to do to make my No. 8 JD mower fit on the 300? It was on the A JD but i wanted live hyd and pto so thats where the 300 came in.
