I've got the TA out of my 544. Looks good except for the output shaft main bearing being a bit loose. I removed the four screws with the snap rings. The manual implies that the TA should now come apart into two pieces. It doesn't, and I'm hesitant to use a press or a drift (where would I apply it?)

Thanks. That worked. Of course, then I had to get the plugs, springs, and pins the popped out back in: I should have placed some sort of restraining band first. I did find all the parts. They're held in by a rubber band for now.

Everything I can see looks fine and the thing seems to work fine when operated by hand. The only thing I've found wrong is that the clutch disk is worn to where the clearence is about .055". The two little springs on the throwout bearing assembly were broken but I don't see that that would have made much difference (I'll replace them, of course). All the seals were leaking, so that at least makes the split worthwhile: the TA clutch would have soon filled up with oil.

Make sure you look close at the 8 rollers and the carrier for flat spot and pits. Check the oil seal area under the ta flywheel for wear and pits.

The rollers and carrier look very good. Unfortunately, the oil seal areas are slightly pitted (and I know the seals were leaking). Speedi-Sleeve?

The ouput shaft main bearing (that is, the large ball-bearing at the rear of the TA) is a sliding fit in the casting. Is that a problem? If so would it work to tighten it up by punching the casting and perhaps applying Loctite?

I've figured out why the thing was making noise when I tried to engage it: the throwout bearing fork was striking the clutch finger adjusting screws (the throwout bearing itself is also loose and spins rough). So now I know what the original problem was.

The carrier is 2.943. The pitting does not appear to exceed .001". I think I'll go with a Speedi-Sleeve: won't have to disassemble the thing any further. The sun gear seal doesn't leak so I'd rather just leave it alone.
