Sorry for the new post on H-4 MEGNETO...

Hello all...
For some reason I can not find anything when I search on the forums on this site always comes back with no matches...
The reason for the post is I may have a bit of time to get around to checking why the megneto on my H was bypassed with a coil...
Tractor is running so the points, condensor, rotor, and distributer cap are good...
I can hear the megneto impulse snapping...so that seems to be working...
The only things left looks like are the coil and the magnet...
I read some where to touch the magnet with a flat blade screw driver and you will fill the magnet pulling on the screw driver when pulling it away...
I touched the magnet that is where the coil mounts too and there is no magnetizen at all...Question is am I checking at the right place...
I hoping I have a bad coil if so I will get a new one, and a set of points and condensor...But if the magnet is bad than looks like I'm going to have to find a new one somewhere...Thanks...

What you have is a work around repair from someone who didn't want to send it to a mag shop or couldn't find one.

If you remove the magnet from the mag it should hold a good sized metal screwdriver across the ends. But thats not really a good test.
What you need is a new H4 coil and your magnet recharged with a magnet charger. A good mag rebuilder, like Nebraska Kirk, has a magnet charger and the parts you need. A fully rebuilt mag will give years and years of reliable service with just light oiling and general maintenance.....Not sure what he charges for H4 mags but its worth every penny.

I guess the previous poster is thinking of the F4 mag. The H4 magnet is down inside the area where the coil mounts, not on the mounts themselves.

Sorry, I was thinking F4. But I would still send it to someone like kirk and be done with it.

Thanks guys...
Well as far as the magneto...I've been all over the net and some sites call it a H-4 and some sites call it a F-4...
There is a video that shoes a magneto like I got...
Could not make a live link but just copy and past it on your browser, it will work...

There are some local alternator, generator, starter, electric motor repair there might be one that can recharge the magnet for me...I'll check on it tomorrow...Thanks again for the help...Raner...

Is this a "correct" restoration or a working tractor? If a working tractor, enjoy it the way it is. If a restoration, you may be better off to simply by a working mag from a reputable source.

"some sites call it a H-4 and some sites call it a F-4."

NOT correctly, they don't! Those mags are two completely different "animals"!

Well looks like I got an H-4...
It's a working tractor but its in good shape.
I rather have the magneto working if possible the reason being it bugs the heck out of me seeing the magneto coil cover setting there with no coil wire hooked up to it...and I think the magneto is a more efficient ignition than a coil...
Repairs I have done so far...
Removed slack from steering down to 1/2 inch from 4 inches.
Repaired Belly pump oil leak.
Repaired oil leak at back of engine, Thought it was rear main seal but pulled pan and rear oil pan plate and checked the rear main seal and was not leaking some one did not seal the rear plate properly and left it loose resealed and tighten and no more leak.
Repair charging system (Alternator) and wiring...
Overhauled carburetor.
Cleaned bottom of oil pan and bottom of oil filer housing and oil pickup screen, change oil and filter. 50 psi at idle after the clean up.(little high but I can leave with it).Was 20 psi before cleaning. Engine is very clean no crud at all...
And some other little repairs here and there...
One rear tire is weak but got an extra wheel and tire with the tractor but the wheel is wider looks like an inch or so but the tire is the same size need to remount it on the original wheel.
Almost done thanks to everyone on this forum for all the help...Raner...
