ihc 3688 hydrualics

My front end loader stopped working on the weekend, so I drained the oil, removed the filter and found a 3/4 inch square block of wood laying in the bottom of the filter housing. My first thought was vandalism and that more wood is piled up in the system but the dealer says nothing should get past a screen in the bottom. After I bled the air my power steering and pto still work but i'm wondering if anyone has any ideas to troubleshoot this situation.

The first time I replaced the hydraulic spin on filter on my Kubota L2850 I found a steel shaving about 3 inches long curled up inside it. I blamed it on Japanese sabotage but I have over 1200 hours on it now and no further problems so far.

If just the loader and hitch quit working the most likely cause is a relief valve stuck open. Other possibilities would be a blown O-ring or a failed pump.usually if you have an O-ring failure you will have a slight bit of hydraulic pressure. Sudden pump failures are unusual but two possibilities there would be a broken pump shaft of the gear came off the pump. I would bet on the relief valve being stuck open.

If you have the pfc hydraulics on that tractor, look for pump failure. You may be lucky and have a plugged orfice, stuck swash plate, stuck compensator valve spool, broken signal line or a few other different problems. There is a system to isolate the pump from rest of system for testing but very few shops are equipped to do the test any more. If you know the system there are other ways of getting around that test to nail it down but I cannot explain all of them on here.

Thanks for the helpful ideas, the hydraulics actually did slow down for two days before they died so would I be lucky and have an o ring piled up?

I wish I knew what kind of hydraulics are in it, what is pfc?
I'm farm boy mechanical, been to ag college, just not rich
enough to have it hauled to a repair shop if it's something I
can do at home. I will check my owners manual for
terminology. Does anyone know if the ihc 3688 hydraulic
pump is easy to get at?

I have one of these and have experienced about every problem one can have with it..first the hitch pump is located down behind the rear tire on the clutch side..valves are on the oppisite side. the o ring mentioned sounds as if it could be your problem if things went away gradually. it is located in the pump mounting plate to remove you must drain all hyd oil and remove plate..pump will come with it..pump can be inspected when you do this..when the pump shaft breaks its usually still on pump but you can turn it easily..if its good it should be difficult to turn. post back and let us know what you find.

Thanks so much for the info. I am stuck at my off farm job for a couple days but I will try to tear it apart this weekend. I talked to a service guy, says it isn't a pfc hydrualic system, it's probably called an open center. I will check as much as possible this weekend and tell you guys.

I never saw a 3688 that did not have the PFC hydraulic system unless it has been converted back to the gear pump. It still would have a lot of components of the original PFC (IH called it PPH at the time due to Case patent rights). At any rate, it would be closed center with a priority valve and flow control levers on the console below hydraulic levers if pfc.
