W4 clutch adjustment?

I recently got a 1948 W4. Runs and drives great but I"m having one big issue. The clutch is ridiculously grabby. It acts like a button clutch, either disengaged or engaged with little to no slipping in between and when it does it chatters. The release and engage point it also about an inch from the top of the travel of the pedal. I read about clutch finger adjustment causing this but not exactly sure about how to do that or where to measure

If the tractor has not been used for some time before you got it, it is possible that you are dealing with a slightly rusty flywheel and pressure plate. The easiest cure for that is to simply the use and drive the tractor. Another possibility is a flyweel that seriously needs to be resurfaced. Only way to know for sure is to tear into it. Nice thing about a W4 is that you can do all the work from the topside of the tractor.

sounds like it is just worn out. grease or oil on the disc will cause it to be jumpy. engaging near end of pedal travel indicates disc is worn. is there 1" free travel. i have seen where the grease from the release brg is all over in there from over greasing. if it gets into disc that will make it jump.

There is no "adjustment" other than pedal free play, and from what you have said, yours is about right.

Clutch is shot, or clutch/flywheel is rusty. That's pretty much the long and short of it here.

Everything comes out the top on the W4. You can get to the clutch pretty quick to see what's going on.

Thanks for the comments. I had an idea it might just need a clutch replacement. Was just hopeing there was a way to adjust fingers on pressure plate. Heard of people doing that on cubs with the same issues. I might try to run it and wear any rust off if that's the issue. I just use it for pulls and there's just a few left this year anyways. What's everyone's suggestions on a good place to buy a clutch kit. Found one on redrunparts I believe for 215

That might have been me talking about pressure plate finger adjustment. I went round and round, finally figured out on my "H" I have to adjust the pressure plate fingers to sit 3/16" away from the release bearing, and then sit the pedal 1 1/2" away from the transmission case. Don"t know about your W4, but it sure seems like the fingers might have to sit pretty close to the release bearing for it all to wirk.

Yes, the fingers have to be pretty close. 1" of movement at the pedal translates to about 1/8" of movement at the throwout bearing. Or, something like that. Mechanical advantage.

Thing is, I do not know how you'd adjust the fingers on an H/W4 pressure plate. The one I changed out did not have any adjustments, either the old one or the new one.
