Farmall 450 Front End Wobble

The front end of our Farmall 450 wobbles. I think the play is in the gear and top of the spindle. How can we tighten these up without replacing them? The worm gear seems to be okay. I tried posting pictures but can"t get them to work.

The top bushing under the sector (flat gear) is often worn. when worn it allows the esctor to move away from the worm. The worm bushing (steering wheel side of box) and the ball bearing on the front can be worn as well. There is no adjustment other than correct bushing bearing clearance. Check those first. Also check all U joints in the shaft, the bottom bushing, and the tire balance.

in addition to the bushings, the shaft itself may be worn if it has seen a lot of use. Had bad wobble in our SM, replaced the bushings and had to build up the worn spot, turn it back down, then installed it 90degrees from past position. Now we can go down the road wide open with no wobble at all.

A tech article in Red Power Magazine last year described a quick and dirty farmer fix for this.

This involves grinding approximately 0.015" off one half the OD of worm gear bearing race. Then shim the opposite side over 0.015" using a piece of shim stock. This jams the worm tighter into the sector gear.

This sounds like a good temporary fix. The real fix is replacing the upper and lower bushings as well as the shaft. But this is a pretty big job for most tinkerers and it fairly expensive to complete. The Red Power method costs nothing but the shim stock.

I don't think that you can wear out the gear on the top of the bolster shaft on a 450. the gear only wears in the straight forward position so that gives you six lifetimes of wear, but i'm sure that new bushings and bearings wouldn't hurt a thing.

Check the coupling that connects the shaft out of gear case and from powersteering pump could be worn.

We ended up flattening out small pieces of wire and pounding them in around the spector gear teeth on the end of the spindle shaft. It took most of the wobble out of the front end.
