Farmall 450 Diesel... who still uses them for regular work?

While I've mainly been looking for a 504 or 544, I was curious if anyone still uses 450 diesels for anything? I'm intrigued by the gas start on these. I'm thinking mainly hay.

I've heard they are a little complicated, but I'm not sure if that's supposed to mean complicated as compared to most modern motors... or just complicated compared to engines of the day.

Most of these I've seen have been restored for show, and haven't seen any still being "worked".

Thanks!

Have a friend that still uses two of them regularly. One of them he does all of his spraying with. Farms a lot of acres too.

I drive by one on my way to work. He has a small field along the state highway. White grill with the exhaust on the right.

They didnt make very many. The reason you dont see many at shows is that most of them are still WORKING!Just like my trusty Super M.

I use my 450D for brush hogging, backing wagons, disking corn stubble, and next year it'll be hooked to the sprayer. So, Mine's still a working tractor. I like using it because it's so easy on fuel. It's not a handy chore tractor, however, unless you leave it running all the time. -Andy

Here you don't see any working because they are too small for the average farmer in this area today. I know of 3 M's that are still working tractors. One does 15 acres of hay a year, one pulls a manure spreader only on a daily basis (was owners first tractor when he started so he keeps it) and mine. I know of 1 450 that mows about 10 acres of CRP once a year. My Bil has the smallest dairy herd I know of in the area at 40 cows. His small tractor is an 826. He crops about 700-800 acres and has beef too. Most of the other dairies are 400 cow operations. The rest of the farmers up here are going over to 4X4 tractors.

Use ours on the auger. Start it in the morning & never shut it off all day. Elevates & idles all day on 7 gallons of fuel. Good power & ready when you bring in loads. Dad got it new in 1956 or7.

I use my MD more than my SMTA for fieldwork. BUT I farm 7 acres in 4 pieces and hire out anything but tillage :). As I expand I plan on still using the MD until I buy a 706.

I use my 450 diesel on 495 new holland haybine cutting 90 acres hay all season long.Years ago used to pull plow, disc and all of the main chores baling hay, feed grinding.I also ran IHC 241 round baler for four years before getting bigger machines and tractors. If I had to tomorrow I would not be afraid to plow and disc with her again.Scott

Thanks for all the responses. We do have an 806 but I've been wanting something in/around that 50hp range just for economics... and we need a second "larger" tractor. Who knows if I can even find one for a decent price around but I'm glad to hear they are able workers.
