Farmall M engages only in 5th

I just bought a Farmall M and its in pretty good shape but yesterday when I was out planting our winter rye I found that I could only go forward in fifth gear! I took the shift lever off thinking that it was worn but it was in pretty good shape. I checked to see if it would engage the forks to put it in gear and it did, but it still would not get into gear. Any suggestions on what I should do moving forward? I'm new to Farmalls and this will be my first time working on one. Thanks for the advice

Don't know if it's your issue, but is it stuck in 5th or just wont go in any gear other than 5th? I had a M that would get stuck in gear even if you moved the shifter, turns out the problem was my shifter would move the fork forward, then could lift out and go back into the slots of the other two forks. What I had to do was lift out the shifter, look at the forks and use the end of the shifter to line all the forks then just be careful not to lift up on it when shifting. Not sure if it helped but that's my M experience, Mike

Look down into the tranny and you will see sets of shift rails Line them all up with a BIG screwdriver into the center position. Reinstall the lever and go. Get new cups to keep the lever in there.

Thanks for the responses. It's not that the tractor is stuck in fifth but it is the only gear that will engage. I looked on other threads earlier today and went out and lined up all of the forks in the center position and reinstalled the lever hoping that it was just stuck in gear - didn't help. I moved the forks into R,1,2,3 & 4 to see if the problem is the shift lever - again nothing. It idles in N just fine though. Can't seem to figure this one out!

Could this possibly be a 9 speed and the shifter is caught bewtween the hi and low? Have had this problem with a 9 speed before. if its an M&W 9 speed theres a shifter on the right side of the trans

If it does not move in any gear but 5th (all other positions act like neutral) the counter shaft has an issue. Probably a key stripped on the constant mesh gear, or possible a just broken shaft. 5th is the only gear that does not use the counter shaft.

If it tries to kill the engine in all gears but 5th, (and you have aligned all rails as you posted) then the 4th 5th slider is out of the shifter forks, or the shifter fork for 4th 5th is broken, or the intermediate bearing is jammed and driving the shaft. Jim

If sure there's no problem with the shifter or forks. Remove the belt pulley gear box if it has one or the opening cover. Should be able to look in the hole to see the problem. Front gear on the lower shaft should turn along with the gears and shaft on behind it anytime the top gear driving the lower gear does. If more than 5 gear teeth sets on the lower shaft you could have a aftermarket setup.

When looking through the pulley opening if you have a 9 speed there will be two sets of constant mesh gears instead of just one.

When you had the shift lever out did you line up the rails all in neutral as the shift lever has probably messed them up so now just the one for 5th is hooked to the lever.Remove the lever again and to help tie the clutch pedal down to remove any binding then line up all the rails in neutral and try again. What looked good to you mite not be just up to snuff.

Quick test: Engage the PTO then observe the PTO shaft with the clutch engaged and the transmission in any gear except 5th.

If the PTO is NOT turning there's a problem with the countershaft drive (broken countershaft, busted constant mesh gear key, stripped constant mesh gear set, etc.) Otherwise it's a problem with all 3 shifting forks (not likely.....)

Either way it sounds like you're gonna need to remove the top cover for a peek inside.
