Farmall H (gasoline evaporation)

I have several old H's in the shed and I occasionally use one. Since gasoline is an expensive item nowdays I only put in about what I need for the job. If I let one set afterwards for a couple weeks with a half gallon left in it the gas will be gone. The carburetor is not leaking and the sediment bowl is not leaking. Where does the gas go? Does the gas really evaporate?

Yep the gas now days is magic gas. You leave it very long and it goes bye bye. The more alcohol it has in it the fast it goes bye bye. Another way for the big guys to take from the little guy. Me I store all my gas in sealed jugs and leave little if any in a gas tank

Yes. Gasoline has a low vapor pressure. It evaporates easily. the higher the temperature the faster the evap. The modern car has a pressurized fuel system and because the vapors are trapped, or separated and liquified in a eveporative canister, then returned to the tank, little is lost. Tractors in a shed get toasty. Drain it out if you want it. (are you sure no one is finding alternate uses for it? Jim

Yep that stuff will evaporate. I only put in 3 gals at a time. It will let me mow or rake for 2 hours and get back to the house. The fields I work are small. I have a 300 also and notice that it does no evaporate as fast because the tank is hidden under sheet metal .

I know you said your carburetor isn't leaking, but...

Your carburetor is leaking.

I've got a Cub, that if you don't shut off the fuel at the sediment bowl, the gas will "disappear."

You can't tell that it's leaking unless you catch it at just the right time. Then you will see ONE drip.

There is no "moisture" or discoloration on the carburetor. There is no smell of raw gas. There is no stain on the ground.

Once I accidentally left the fuel on all winter, and lost about 5 gallons of gas. Turn off the gas, and it doesn't lose a drop.

If you are not shutting the fuel off it IS leaking.

I do not see any way to lose 1/2 gallon to evaporation in 2 weeks. I was thinking the same thing on my H, it as leaking so slow that the fitting was damp, but no drip was observed.

If your sure the carbs not leaking, it's evaporating out the carb as it's open to the air. OR out the from under the gas cap if it's not in good shape.

I have good gas caps and shut the fuel off when not in use for a long time. I don't lose much if any fuel.
