1949 Farmall - H...Hydraulic oil leak...need some advice...

Hey All...
Almost done fixing all the stuff on the H... I just got...
Ok I have a hydraulic fluid leak it's coming from the seal...
Looks like it's the seal for the hydraulic housing for the power
lift...
Found 5018EA stamped on the casting... The seal has this
part number 359770R91... but don't know if it's the IH part number for the seal...
Just removed the coupling and now I can dig out the seal...
I don't have a repair manual...If it's not to much trouble can some one give the IH part number or crossover number for the seal...Thanks...

The oil seal just behind the pump shaft coupling is 43509D. The oil seal for the control shaft is 494027R1. Both are IH part #'s from the manual and that is it for oil seal's per my manual. Hope this helps, ~Anthony

Thanks Anthony...
You wrote...The oil seal just behind the pump shaft coupling is 43509D. The oil seal for the control shaft is 494027R1.
Is the control shaft towards the front of the tractor and the coupling connects behind it...
Is the pump shaft seal towards the back of the tractor and the coupling connects in front
of it... Or do I have it backwards...
Sorry for the stupid questions but need to be clear when I order it online...
Thanks again for the comeback on the seal number...Raner...

The pump shaft seal is towards the back of the tractor (where the coupler hooks into the shaft that connects to the transmission), the control shaft is the one on the right front. Hope this is clear, best of luck and remember there are never stupid questions on here, we all needed to learn at some point and many of us (myself included) are still learning! ~Anthony

Thanks Anthony...
That cleared up what is what perfectly...
I was messing around in my tool box and found a
seal for a 7 1/4 or 8 1/4 Dodge rear end pinion seal (Can't tell it's been to many years since I turned wrenches at a dealership but it's one or the other do know that for sure)
I had the coupler out so I checked the ID of the seal and it's
a real good snug fit so tomorrow I will check the OD and see
it will work...I just may luck out if the OD is the same will see...
One more thing what kind (off the rack fluid can I use to fill
the unit back up....The one in there sure looks like power steering fluid Chrysler uses...Thanks again for taking the time to help me out...Raner...

The fluid might be almost anything. The fluid is supposed to be non detergent 30 wt for summer, and non detergent 20 wt for winter. If you share implements with newer tractors use what they use. Hytran fluid, or JD Hydraulic Transmission Fluid is just fine to use as well. Jim

Thanks Jim...
I'll see what I can find in some of the auto parts stores close to the house... If they don't have any of the fluids you mentioned I'll go to the case tractor dealer it is 20 miles from the house...

Even Walmart carries hydraulic fluid that's compatible with Hytran. If you can't find it you're not looking.

BTW, 359770R91 is an IH part number. However, it shows up as a wiring harness for a Super H in a google search.

Ok...
Removed the controller assembly from the tractor...
I'm trying to remove the shaft to replace the seal but don't want to mess up...
Is the gear just pressed in the shaft, I can see a key slot where
the gear against the shaft, and that baby is on tight...
More questions later when I start putting it together...some stuff
came apart and need to figure where it goes...Thanks Raner...

Raner, here is the belly pump break down for your H,
it may help you with re-assembly.

Good Luck, ~Anthony

Anthony...
Went to the link but it's just showing the main page...
Can you check and see if it's showing the brake down for you...
Thanks Anthony...now I need to see how to remove the shaft from the gear don't want to use a press till I know that is the correct way to remove it...
I may have to get a repair manual does anybody know where to
get a PDF DOWNLOAD MANUAL...Thanks Raner

If you put the entire link in it should bring you
to the parts break down.

http://partstore.caseih.com/us/partssearch.html#ep
c::mr59088ar988147

Or you can go to the main parts page/"Parts
Store":
1. Search by model "Farmall H"
2. Click on second listing, Farmall H tractor (NOT
hv)
3. Click on "hydraulic system"
4. Click on 3rd link down (188) Hydraulic lift-all
attachment special
5. it should bring you to the break down, might
help with diassembly/reassembly

I have the manual at home, im at work right now,
ill take a look if you haven't figured it out by
then.

~Anthony

Got it Anthony...
Saved the link for the brake down...
I'll wait a bit see if someone knows the correct way to remove the shaft from the gear...Thanks Anthony...Raner

You may want to post a new question so it appears at
the top of the first page, this post is now on the
second page and many (not all) don't go past the
first page. Plus your question has changed so best
bet is to ask your new question about the gear
removal in a fresh post. ~Anthony
