Does anyone know of a source for a steering shaft with the worm gear on it. The tractor is a Farmall M. My records indicate that I have replaced the gear that attaches to the vertical shaft. I have approximately 90 degrees of play with the steering wheel before the worm gear touches the flat round gear that fits on the vertical shaft. Feel free to educate me on terminology. Thanks, Ellis

Is the top bushing worn? Use a pry bar & determine how much side play exists at the top of the shaft. Even the last of the M's produced is 60 years old so all/any of the associated parts would be a candidate for replacement.

I have several in excellent condition. . what overall length do you need. Couple of these were from PS models. E mail is open.

The top bushing for the vertical shaft is fairly easy to replace.

All you need to do is jack the tractor up enough for the shaft to drop down to where you can get at the top bushing. Dig it out and tap the new one in.

That will take care of some of your wobble.

A new worm shaft was $385 last time I looked.

Rather than replace that expensive shaft, you can use a .030" shim to push the front bearing on the worm shaft towards the sector gear. This will cause the worm gear to tighten up with the sector gear, and take away some of the slop.

A short section of cheap hose clamp is about .030-.035".

You need to grind about .030" off the outer race of the bearing to make room.

When you go to reassemble, the shim goes in on the left, and the ground-off side of the bearing goes to the right (as you face the tractor while working on it.

We did this to Dad's 400, and the wobble is completely gone.
