hellow everyone, i am new to the farmall cub and i am trying figure out why the pto keeps disengaging its self. i have pulled the shaft out of the back of the tractor the splines on it look good, the collar looks good so does the shifter pin. the pilot bushing is worn out. could this cause my problem? also how far past the transmission case wall should the transmission input shaft project? thanks everyone!

Those splines do get worn and the front gets rounded some. Is the linkage good and the pin in the arm that moves the shaft good without wear.

Did you check the little shift lever? It should move up and down (spring loaded) to lock into the slotted guide bracket.

After looking things over real good I have determined that the splines are wore out on the input shaft and on the back side of the collar that slides up on the shaft. Also it looks like the input shaft has moved back away from the PTO shaft. Those brass bushings on the pilot shaft are worn.I figure I'm going to have to split the tractor. Do I split it at the bell housing by the motor or back by the gear shift? Thanks

Yea its good. The splines are wore out on the input shaft and on the back side of the collar that slides on to the input shaft.

That's what I thought. I'm going to get a shop manual. Got any tips to give me? I've never split a tractor before! Thanks

The transmission input shaft is a long shaft that goes from the engine clutch to the PTO. When I replaced mine, I bought a new one form TM Tractor Parts on the Cub web site. They are about $125 from him. I think they are very much more from CaseIH. Roger
