belt pulley control

Hi, I"m I just bought a 1947 farmall h. There is a
belt pulley control under the steering wheel. This
is a dumb question, but is it for the fan belt or
generator belt? And how should I set it? Any info
is appreciated for I am a novice (obviously).

Is it a small hand crank beneath the wheel and linkage that runs to the right front of the engine? If so it's the radiator shutter control - used to help control temperature on tractors equipped to burn distillate fuel.

Since you are a novice to your Farmall I highly recommend you purchase a reproduction operators manual for your tractor - about $30 from this site (punch on the "Tractor Manuals" link on the top left of this page).

My first thought was you are talking about the belt pulley and the lever to ingage it. This lever is under the the general area of the steerling wheel. The belt pulley drive would be under your gas tank. This is used to run a endless belt to power a stationary machine like a saw mill or threasher. You may be missing the pulley? Normally it would not be running.

You asked it so now you will be informed (dumb questions are not asked). The engines belts are adjusted as in most applications with either an adjustable pulley, or a way to move the mounts.
The pulley control on a H is used to control the gears driving the flat belt drive assembly located under the fuel tank. This is usually a small flange with holes, but may have a large flat belt pulley 8" wide and 10" across (as noted in the other posts)
It is a rod control which moves a dog clutch (like folding your fingers with 2 hands). The foot clutch must be pushed in for this to be done, as serious clashing and noise and possible grief can happen if it is connected to a amchine like a feed grinder, and then moved without the foot clutch.

Many tractors have the drive, but are missing the control rod. Owners just put them in gear with the lever on the drive. Not convienient, but so seldom used that it is not a problem. Jim

It is a small hand crank. The manual I have I thought said is a belt pulley control. But does indeed crank instead of pull in or out. What is a radiator shutter? I use only gasoline and so did previous owner. Does the shutter have anything to do with the fan? I'm wondering because the fan runs as soon as I start engine until I shut it off. Again, thanks for info. Good to know I can come to this site and get good information.

As mentioned above, the radiator shutter is a set of louvers in front of the radiator which can be opened or closed in order to regulate the operating temperature of the engine. In the old days, these engines would be run on distillate and needed to be run at a warmer temperature-hence, you closed the shutter as required. No one uses distillate any more. Everyone uses gasoline. So the shutter should be left wide open, or the engine could overheat.

Regarding the fan, it is driven by a belt running from the crankshaft of the engine. Therefore it will turn whenever the engine is running. It is supposed to do that. If it doesn't, again the engine will overheat.

Hope this helps. As also mentioned above, get an operators manual for your tractor and study it over carefully.

Right the fan runs all the time. The shutter has louvers that would restrict air flow by covering the front of the radiator. The shutter has most likely been removed years ago.
