Anything remove / dissolve Permatex gasket sealer?

Does anyone know of anything that will dissolve or remove permatex gasket sealer? I cant use a wire wheel or wirebrush as it is in a hard spot to get at.

Have you tried acetone or carb cleaner spray?

Havent yet but I wondered about trying it. Thank you for your reply. Its on an old rear main seal that the previous owner permatexed in place. Trying to install the seal without removing the crankshaft but cant get the old seal out yet.

I use a single edge razor blade to scrape it off, I don't know if you have enough room to do that though.

Denatured alcohol will dissolve it. About the only thing that will.

If that works methanol should also work.

Permatex makes a gasket remover in a spray can. It's nasty stuff.

A high quality brake cleaner or gasket prep will soften it and loosen it from the said surface to where you can peel it with your fingernail.

Can you get in there with a Dremel with a small wire brush? Maybe using a flexible shaft extension?

Might be possible. It is in a grove for a rear main seal that the mechanic had told me it was permatexed in by who ever did it the last time. Im hoping it was just used on the mating surfaces and not the whole seal. Will keep that in mind as well.
