Replacing wet sleeve (installing them) O ring lubricant

I have a BC-144 gas engine that I am replacing the sleeves. So far in my internet research in regarding what lubricant to use on the O ring, I have noted 2 soaps and one grease choice. One individual was using dish water soap, e.g. Dawn, another was using something simply referred to as lubricating soap, it looked fairly thick, and a third party mentioned Vasoline. With oil on one side and water/coolant on the other side of the O ring it must be resistant to both oil and water. But I would think that there would be preferred/recommended choice.

What would be a recommend product to use for doing this installation.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks guys,

It looks soap of some sort is the way to go. I checked with the local John Deere Industrial bunch and they have liner soap. I will be getting a life time supply for $21.28 plus tax.

I keep a little bottle of "Murphy's pure vegetable oil soap" in my shop for such things. It's good to have for tires and such where you know petroleum isn't the right thing.

I'm pretty sure that Murphy's is the same, or near to it, as John Deere's lubricating soap.

Murphy's is also handy as a lubricant for installing radiator and heater hoses etc. The soap help's seal the hose, and, removal will be much easier even several years down the road.

Gorden HI says to use vegetable on engines with 2 orings on the sleve, oil will trap air between the orings and then blow the orings when the engine gets hot. So I would use vg oil.

You can use just about anything slippery on the o-rings on the
BC144 engine. It is not critical like it is on many other engines. Engines that have orange and black o-rings will swell up when hit with petroleum, ethelyne glycol, etc. (like Deere) and thus the need for soap only. Not the case with a BC or BD144,154. I tend to use whatever dish detergent is around and never had a problem. Note I've rebuilt many BC144s.
