incorrect factory rear tire size, red flag?

Looking at Case 1370 that has 20.8-38 on the rears, though the factory tire is 18.4-38. Heard that wrong tire size may cause severe damage to the transmission.

That is one tire size up and you can generally go that much without a problem. Shouldn't hurt the tranny anyway, but the rim width should allow one size wider without a problem.

Wouldn't scare me a bit. If it was mine and it had 18.4's on it I'd put 20.8's on it. I've had several tractors over the years that had 18.4-34's when I bought them and one of the first things I did was put 18.4-38's on.

The gear ratio does change. This could cause a gear change to operate attachment correctly. The greater traction can also increase transmission loads as well. If loaded with ballast, or Iron, and if traction pulls the engine into maximum torque ranges in low gears, wear in excess of normal can happen. Duals on a tractor are far more problematic. Good sense and working the tractor inside of its design intent is operator driven, not because of tire choice. Jim

Well put. What problems do duals pose? Just too much traction which can really stress out transmission and lug the engine?

i have them on a 1570 and have had no problems, i do not think that in it self world be a problem. as one of the other guys posted and i never run a tractor with eqpt that maxs out the tractor.

Very seldom that I see a tractor of that horsepower around here that does not have duals on it. One size up in singles is surely not going to cause a serious problem unless you are overloading it and pulling it's guts out all the time. I see way more tractors above 120HP with duals than without and that would surely be capable of putting more load on the transmission.

If WORKED, your 1370 WILL have rear end or tranny problems sooner or later, no matter WHAT "shoes" it wears.

Loaded tractor with duals can break an axle by having the weight of the tractor and a lifted attachment load the axla when driven over a rock or bump on the outed tires only. The traction can be an issue in lower gears causing reduced shock protection and stressed gears and bearings. Good sense, no problem. Jim

That's why everyone runs 2 or 3# less pressure in the outside tire... cushions those rocks and bumps more.

Not up on these newer models or Case for that mater. Question is 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. On 4 wheel changing a size will change the ratio between front and rear and that is where problems come in. Same as on your 4 wheel drive truck. All wheels have to turn at correct so the circumfrence of tire to rolling distance on ground is the same for both the front and back.Whoever said that is thinking front wheel assist while others are thinking rear wheel drive only.
