Farmall 656 gas

I am trying to check out the hydraulic system on this tractor. Cant even find pump or resivoir for fluid. It sounds just like a dry power steering pump on a car. Hasn't been used for a few years but has only 2200 hours. Has a front bucket.
Havent been able to find a diagram

All of the "newer" IH tractors have an MCV pump that supplies the power steering, brakes and TA. It draws off of the hydraulic fluid in the tranny, there is no separate fill or reservoir. If you order the TO manual for here it will tell you how to test and replace if needed. I just did one on a 1206. Not too bad a job.

OOPs forgot to add, dip stick and fill tube should be on the operators platform just behind the brake pedals on the row crop model. Round cap with a bale about 2" across.

The transmission and final drive case is the reservoir for the hydraulics. The pump or pumps if it has a three point hitch are on the left side where the hose and pipe come out of the mounting plate and go up to flow control valve and to rear hitch valves. Filter is on right side directly opposite of the pumps. It is an oval cover with six bolts. Has paper filter with screen bypass valve that opens when filter is restricted, like plugged or very cold oil. I would check oil level with dip stick and filter for crud. Uses hydraulic transmission fluid like IH hy-tran.

656 does not have mcv body, power brakes or hydraulic t/a. Only thing hydraulic pump controls is hitch, outlets and power steering. Pump is easy to replace if you have to but do not install the 18 gpm, just doesn't work well with those tractors IMO

On our 656(row crop) the hydraulic dipstick is on the left side of the platform behind the clutch pedal.

Also, ours very frequently gets that whine like a dry powersteering pump on a car and the hydraulics quit working. I pull the cover off the filter on the left side and clean the round round screen part of the bypass filter and it's good to go again.

Whoops need to proofread better. The cover for the hydraulic filter, as stated by others, is on the right side.

Also, to clarify, when I said the dipstick is behind the clutch pedal, I mean it's towards the rear of the tractor from the clutch pedal.
