M and H fenders

Did most of the older farmalls have fenders when they left the show room or dealer stock? Most of the Hs and Ms I have seen here do not have them nor does my SMTA, but wondering if they just got removed and discarded along the way.

They were optional, and the dealers were sensitive to popular demand, so some places were fenderless, some were removed and set against the barn, and some were kept on all the time. I never saw fenders untill we got a 350U (still on it) and dad found some for the SH (still against the garage (back side in the trees (IIRC) Jim

My father in law told me that when they used to buy M's for the farm back in the day they used to remove the fenders and battery box under the gas tank immediately because they used the tractors daily and the fenders made it difficult to get on and off the tractor and the battery boxes were in a horrible spot so changing batteries/unhooking cables, was a real pain...we have stacks of fenders in the barn from all of the M's we used to use.

Growing up I never even knew that fenders or mufflers were options - we never had either. I only knew one other farm that had an H or M. In western Kansas people traded up pretty quick as they needed bigger implements to farm all of that treeless sand.

Funny thing, I used my M for a couple of days without the muffler. I ate so much exhaust I was nauseated. I also understand why dad and grandpa had hearig aids. Grandpa was only deaf to sounds in the same pitch as the engine on the 856 Farmall. Unfortunately, that was right where dads voice fell. He could hear anything but my dad.

At least in the state of Wisconsin, tractors had to be sold with fenders. So almost all Hs and Ms have fenders unless someone took them off to use a cultivator. All my Farmalls (H, MD, 300, 400, 450) all have fenders. So might depend what state you are in. Al

I don't know about laws, but I haven't seen many machines without fenders in WI. Anybody that says it is harder to get on and off with fenders must struggle with walking and chewing gum as well. Yes, with no extensions and a battery under the seat it is tight, but anything else you REALLY have to be trying to make it difficult.

All my Farmall tractors have the fender extensions. With the extensions we could put cultivators our H without taking the fenders off. Also make it a lot easier to get on & off. Al
