I was bailing today. when I stopped and took the tractor out of 1st, now it"s always in reverse. now i can"t put it in any gear or it binds up including reverse. shift lever or fork or counter shaft? split or take top off? any help would be nice.

all you need to do is pull the gearshift out and get a catbar or long screwdriver and line the 3 shifter slots up.the gearshift gets worn on bottom and likes to jump out when shifting in a hurry. quite common on these tractors up to the 660 ihc. need to punch out the pin in gear shift tower, then it will pull out.

another way to try,

1) scotch wheel and jack up one of the rears, rock that wheel and then try. you have to get the pressure off of the tranny before you will be able to move the forks.
2) try to place shifter in reverse position, then rock wheel as in # 1

i am hopeing not to have to split it or even take top off. still dont under stand why i locks up when i try reverse? but i will try your segestions when i get home.

When the trans gets back to operating, put a temporary bolt in the shifter, then buy a "sloppy shifter repair kit" from Ebay It will make the system like new. See the archives for the picture of the shifter tip with dimensions for welding and reshaping it. Jim

The top must come off (Heavy) The removal and replacement, or weld up and repair, is obvious after that. Do not let them get bent when rebuilding the slot. Replace all springs and detent balls if at all doubtful. Jim

If you can't repair finding good used may be a problem. SMTA shift forks are different from other IH tractors.
