Lubricant for Steering Gear Compartment -Farmall H M

Have a question about the "lubricant" used in the steering gear compartment of the Farmall H & M. The old operator/service manuals call for SAE-90 oil. Was a service order change ever issued by IH recommending the lubricant be changed from oil to a heavier grease for the worm & steering sector gears?

It's not as if the gears are constantly turning, as in a transmission or a differential. So I'd say some grease would probably work as well as anything.

When the seal on the bottom of the steering box on our Cub went out, Pappy simply replaced the fill plug with a fitting that had a grease zerk. So whenever we went out and did a job for his custom mowing service, we always hit 'er a couple of licks with the grease gun when we were doing our pre-startup check.

The problem with using grease, even corn head grease, is it doesn't get down to the bushing below the gear, thus you end up with a worn bushing and scored shaft. IH later recommended the additive that was used in tractor transmissions with torque amplifier but that is no longer available. I use a liquid EP gear lube, 80-90, 140 or what ever.

I had the lack-of-lube problem with my "H", and installed new seals in the steering box. For the bottom, I pulled the new seal up from the bottom, using a contraption of washers / sockets / shims / duct tape / all-thread. Ruined a few, but finally got a good one in. Whipped up a 50-50 blend of red wheel bearing grease and 90 wt., with a coat hanger in my drill, and poured it in. Works great.

I used gun grease in mine after rebuilding. I also drilled a hole through the casting and installed a grease zerk to lubricate the bushing.
