Giving up on MD

I have a 1950 MD that Im giving up on. I cant figure out what is wrong with the diesel side of this tractor. Have ran injector cleaner through the pump, and cleaned the pump off the tractor. Tractor runs great on gas, but simply has no power on diesel. Even throttled wide open it still dosent have everything. Ive listed it on the classified section. Maybe im just in over my head on this diesel.

have you taken the pump to a diesel shop with experienced personal? what is meant by no power? need more info. dont know your situation but is no way the averge person can diagnos or repair injection pumps with out training. could be as simple as governor adjust ment.

Don't give up so easily. If it runs ok on the gas side, you could have the pump and injectors rebuilt at a diesel shop. Once you got the rebuilt pump timed properly, you should be golden.

by no power, I mean that the tractor only idles. It wont even pull its own weight in 1st gear. I have checked into taking it to a injection shop, but not wanting to pay 1000 for them to rebuild it. I cant afford it at this time.

Have you checked the filters? Are you getting enough fuel to the pump? It don't sound like all pump problems. I owned a SMD years ago and the butterfly in the intake manifold did not operate correct and it would not pull itself, loss of power. Linkage to your compression release valves might have the valves open. Make sure everything is shut off on the gas side when you switch it over to the diesel side.

The fact that it runs on the D side is great. The pump is not tough to look at and fix. The problem may be that the rack is stuck. only allowing a small amount of injection. Take the cover off and look at the system to see if there is movement when operating the fuel lever (throttle) a little solvent and effort might get it operational. Some older local person and a case of malted beverage and it runs. Jim

I second what Jim said about the stuck rack, we had it happen on one that had been sitting for years. Was not hard to fix as I recall, solvent and working it back and forth gently. I think that it would not run above idle, like yours. You have everything to gain by checking into this.

I agree, I wouldn"t give up on it so easily. My MD ran great one day when I backed it into the shop, came back a month later and it wouldn"t start at all. That was almost 2yrs ago now and I"m still trying to figure mine out and get it running again. Of course I only get a dozen weekends a year to work on it...

Never give up. Never. Have a similar tractor, tried for 2 years to start i t, tried everything, simply would NOT start. Brother came by, asked what going on, toldhim, he asked if I hazd been working on it myself, yes, he said here, give me a screwdriver, and in 5 minutes she ran perfectly.
