Super A axle pivot shaft

I'm reassembling the front end after replacing the steering box internals. The SA has the cast-iron front axle with the S shaped axle pivot that bolts to the bell housing. The steering housing's bolt pattern and locatng pins only allow its halves to go togather one way. The steering housing assembly bolts on to the engin with four bolts, period, can't go wrong there. The axle pivot shsft slides through the axle and into its bushings as it should but its bolt holes wind up about 1/4 inch too low in respect to their holes on the bell housing. Everything went togather as should, no binding, it all looks good. There isn't a 1/4 inch wiggle anywhere. Where can 1/4 inch misalignment come from?
 
Did you replace the pivot pin, or is it original?
It should have a notch ground in both ends of the pin to allow the clamp bolts to pass through the clamp holes AND lock the pin in place.
Knock the pin back out about an inch or so and you'll see one notch. Rotate the pin till the notch is on the bottom, then you can reassemble and the bolts should go through.
 
davset: It sounds like you are describing the set up with a tubular axle. My axle is cast-iron, square in cross section. There are no clamps. The pin is orginal, slides through two bushings and the axle, its only attachment is two bolts into the bell housing. It came apart without any sign of trouble.
 
I think I've solved it. I took the steering housing off, bolted the pivot on the bell housing and slid the housing onto it. I essentially assembled it in reverse. The weight of the housing was enough to flex the pivot so that the housing bolts lined up with their holes on the engin. This was only a dry run without the axle. I'm going to mount the axle in the housing on a wood dowel and see if I can make the dowel slide out as the pivot slides in.
 
1 1/4 inch EMT/conduit and some grease make a near perfect fit through the steering housing and axle bushings. The EMT measures just over 1 1/2 inch. I assembled the steering housing and axle on the conduit, positioned the assembly in front of the mounted axle pivot (actually my wife and I held it there). Pushing the pivot in drove the conduit out. Everything bolted up tight and I'm done.
