magneto/ distributor

The mag turns rapidly to keep the magneto rotation speed at engine speed (to make good electrical power in the primary windings like a generator) This then needs to be reduced to 1/2 engine speed to provide correct timing and direction to the correct plug with the rotor, to fire the cylinder. (4 stroke engines fire after two revolutions) The impulse coupling (snapping noise at starting speeds) is further effort to make the internal generating components move fast enough to fire when cranking by hand at near zero RPM. Do you mean inside the Mag or has it been modified?
If its inside, then it's supposed to be that way to deliver spark only at TDC on compression stroke and not on the exhaust stroke. Distributors has a similar built in function.
