706 injection timing

I am checking the timing on a D282. I bought a new timing window and it has about 10 marks on it. Do you use the very center mark when checking the timing. Nothing is labeled on the tool and my manuals do not say for sure.

Tool is for checking cam ring movement with engine speed. Each mark is 2 degrees pump. D282 in 706 has speed advance of 3 degrees pump, or 1 1/2 marks. Spec is 1 degree at 1400-1600 and 3 degrees at 1900-2100 engine RPM. That is at full throttle on the test stand. No load on engine will be a bit earlier on RPM range.

Inside the 'window are 2 'disks'.Each has a mark on it.One 'disk' is stationary, the other rotates. When both marks are lined up,you are at TC.-Provided you have the flywheel marks in the correct place. As was said, the little lens just lets you watch the advance movement as the engine is running. The way I do it:Set the flywheel X degrees(acording to the book) BTDC.At my altitude (5000 ft)advance 2 MORE degrees.Install pump with both marks lined up.You are ready to start....
