MD Cylinder Head

Got 2 MD cylinder heads. One has p/n 277098 R1 and the other has what seems the part number area smooth and 880869 R5 (cant read the first two numbers, guessing 88) stamped into the head with ih insignia before and after. Is the the R5 head a service part that someone installed at one time?? Thanks guys.

It's a guess, but maybe your head is off a power unit. I have a U-2 power unit. The head on it is like you describe, the casting part number is ground off and the part number is stamped on just like the engine serial numbers are done. Part number agrees with info in parts catalog for the U-2. Head looks same as c-113 head for a tractor. Probably some small difference but I think could be interchanged.

Both of those heads are later than a MD. 260869 was used on some late M tractors but a lower suffix than R5. 277098R1 is a later head than 260869R5. Think they even went to a R6 on that head. Would need to refresh my memory to say for sure. Most times a date code on the same side as the casting number is easy to read on those heads.
Do know early 400 D tractors were still using 260869R4.
