broke off temp sending unit in head

Final stages of restoring my H. All painted, putting gauges in. When I went to replace temp sending unit in head ,it broke off. Guess I should have taken the old one out before I painted.Any advice? It's the adapter bushing or whatever you call it that broke off.The actual sender is out.

It depends how much is sticking out from the head. If there is some shank there you could try a pipe wrench or vice grips. I recommend heating the area around it first. If there isn't much sticking out you could try taking a punch and collapsing it in on itself. Or drilling the walls as thin as you can and using a bolt extractor.

If you got room and a little time I'd try to saw through it and collapse it with a punch.

That happened to me. I drilled it out in stages working up to just shy of the threads. I had to start small, like 3/16, because the temp sensor was still in there(broken off). As I recall, I took it up 3/4" and then beat on it with a chisel. It collapsed before it unscrewed. Be really careful to collect all the iron filings before you bolt it all down. I was lucky that I broke mine before I took the head off the engine.

The fitting itself on my utility was just a 1/2 x 3/8" pipe bushing.

When drilled to 5/8 or so a square sided exreector works well (because it doesn't swell the shell as it twists on it) Sears and others sell them. Jim

If you are good with a welder, try getting a nut almost as large as the fitting ,and weld it to it.When it all cools it will partialy shrink the fitting and give you something to use a wrench on to back it out.We often do that in our shop to remove broken bolts etc.You might have to go at it a couple times.

Sometimes those are brass i would clean it to see if yours is. You will need a pipe extractor if you go that way sometimes the twisted ones will work the best make sure its a name brand and not an import. Next option would be a die grinder. Working maintence found out all broken stuff like that take different approackes.
