ok i think the gears are bad in this mag, the rotor doesnt turn by hand so thats about all it can be, and be jumping time, befor i buy does anybody have a good j-4 mag? if so how much, i really need this little cub running i have several mowing jobs i was doing with it besides my farm, i used my ford jubilee out of sheer desperation last saturday...big mistake now today i have a unhappy customer and tractor ruts to go fix... i knew better but the guy wouldnt believe me,

Those gears dont go bad usually. So when you have the cap off and turn the engine over you say the rotor doesent turn that could be timing gear in the engine.

yes the rotor doesnt turn by hand,at least it didnt in the position it is in now, i have a new one comming that should be in today ot tommorrow, but im not sure if this is the problem after reading the repies to my other post, what happens if i remove the back of the magneto to look? the piece with the 2 tanks that engauge the engine, any problems? it ran fine for several years, the first time it lost power it shut down by loosing power to the cylinders 1 after the other, found a cracked coil, and replaced it as well as the points, condenser, cap, wires and plugs [ the rotor looked fine] the second time it lost power it backfired several times as it died, so i based the descision to buy a rotor on that as well as it was the only original piece still in there , got to admit im kind of lost here and there is nobody in this area that works on tractors so its up to me to fix it

i should mention that after i replaced all the stuff above the cub ran for about a hour and a half before shutting down, nothing was hit while using the tractor so i dont have a event to have caused it to just give up

Have you removed the mag from the engine? If you have removed the mag and you are turning the driven end of the mag by hand and the rotor doesn't move the gears have probably failed in the mag.

If the mag is still on the engine and the rotor doesn't move when cranking the engine your cam gear probably has failed as Gene suggested. Hal

Where did you get the new condenser i hope you saved the old one cause if it ran then quit again just mite be that new condenser.
