Price estimates for 1951 M

Hi,

I went today to look at a 1951 M in my area. It has supposedly run within the last year, but has been sitting for the last 3 months. The owner couldnt/wouldnt start it, so I dont know if or how well it runs. The sheet metal is ok, but the bottom front cover is missing. Steering seems tight with very little play but again, its not running at the moment so I dont know if its good or not.

It has been converted to 12V and has a live hydraulic system. The tires are shot and need to be replaced, and there are no fenders or lights (though it has the mount and a tool box).

I'm just curious to see what everyone things as to the value of an M nowadays. I've seen some go for quite a bit ($3-4000 in show condition) and some that are rough go for a lot less. I think the seller and I are pretty far apart on the price, especially since it isnt running and I couldnt take it for a spin.

thanks in advance,

Figure about what a decent M with good tires, runs and operates good costs. Then deduct what tires cost and a engine rebuild if needed. Usually end up junk price.

You can buy a running one for 1000 to 1400. Not running no more than $500,if he will get it running for you it would be worth more at least you could tell if it had any major issues.

If not running 500 max. If he sells it to you with a guarantee that it will run well or money back 1000 max. The live hydro adds but the tires are 1500 on a 2000 tractor. Jim

I paid $850 for my M with live hydraulics and power steering. The tires were junk on mine but it ran like a top.

Something is fishy there. The field tractors here sit that long at a time and I consider them "running". They would if I turned the key. I have cars here that sit that long but are running.

I'd tell him you won't pay over scrap. Maybe that will help him dig up a battery. For all you know it will sound like it is about to throw a rod and burn oil like a chimney. He's probably one of those guys that says it just needs some Risalone and some time with a plow. Suuuuuure it does.

I paid $100.00 for a Farmall A with the moldboard plow. The engine was a basket case, but all there. I had to replace the tires, rims, wiring, steering wheel & seat. With new sleeves and pistons it ran like it was new. The head needed new valves and springs. I wouldn't pay too much for that M. Hal

Around here that's a 500 dollar tractor. That's about what it would bring across the scales. Running, maybe $600.

I see a lot of ridiculous pricing on Craigs list.

as others have stated unless the owner can start it, and let you operate it and all its systems, its worth what it weighs , if it ran 3 months ago it should not be that hard to start, if the owner wont put out the effort its usually because he knows something about the tractor he doesnt want you to find out before you plunk down the cash , i tell him to get the thing running or find another tractor to buy

Thank you very much to everyone for the advice. In thinking it over since I looked at it, I pretty much came to similar conclusions. I"ll offer him $500 and see what goes. If it runs, great. If not, then I"ve got a project. I doubt he"ll take it but who knows.

thanks again!
