farmall 300 clutch

I was bush hogging with the 300 last night
and noticed that when I have the PTO
engaged it want go in to reverse with
throttle full have to slow it all the way
down but it can go in to reverse if PTO is
not engaged this tractor has never had t/a
and had never had it and it also has
independent PTO to. Thanks

Unless you have an overrunning clutch installed, you have to deal with the momentum of the implement. A brush hog has a serious amount of momentum.

overrunning clutch would not make a difference with an IPTO. The PTO drive is isolated from the transmission when clutch is engaged. The PTO is driven off the pressure plate not the clutch disc. Will it go into reverse if you stop the tractor (push in the clutch) in gear then try to go in reverse? What confuses me is everything infront of the IPTO unit is turning constantly. The PTO is turned on or off inside the unit attached to the rear of the tractor. The only thing I can come up with is the carrier bearings for the PTO drive directly behind the pressure plate is bad, allowing the PTO drive sleeve (for the lack of a better term) to drag on the transmission input shaft. This defelection is noticed when there is a load on the PTO and the drive gears in the middle of the tractor are trying to climb each other. Just a wild hair.

How won't it go into reverse?

What exactly happens when you push the clutch, stop the tractor, and try to shift?

Does it, or does it not have IPTO? IPTO is "live" and the mower will continue to run at full power when you push the clutch. The mower will start to slow down if you have a transmission-driven PTO.

The tractor may not have IPTO, if it did not come with a TA from the factory.

On a transmission-driven PTO, if you push the clutch pedal and slip the transmission out of gear while the mower is still running, the mower will continue to drive the transmission until it runs out of momentum. You will not be able to shift until the mower is completely stopped.
